Why learn Russian?
Russian is the most spoken language in Europe, which is no surprise given the size of the country and the fact that it is spoken in several other European countries too!
It is widely thought that Russian is one of the most complex languages for an English person to learn, as it has quite a difficult grammatical structure. If you’re up for the challenge though, it is incredibly rewarding.
Here are some interesting facts about this great country and its language:
Did you know that Russian is actually one of the languages that you need to know to work at the International Space Station? Astronauts need to learn it, along with English, because the computer system that they use is in these two languages.
Russia also has more times zones than any other country in the world; 11 in total although, since 2011, it has only used 9 of them.
A traditional delicacy of Russia is kholodets or chicken’s foot soup…delicious.
If you can brave the cold, Oymyakon is thought to be the coldest inhabited pace on earth; on February 6th 1933, it recorded a temperature of -67.7°C.
You may not be venturing to space anytime soon, or learning Russian to go and test out the delicacies, but whether you’re taking it up for fun, planning a trip to Russia and want to pick up the basics, adding to the number of languages that you speak, or even taking it on for employment opportunities, it really is a fascinating language.
